John Cutter On WPIX 11 News: What To Do During An Active-Shooter Situation

Following the tragic shooting at a California bar that left 13 people dead, JCI President John Cutter went on WPIX 11 News to demonstrate the best things one can do if they find themselves in an active-shooter situation.

When asked what should be done in these situations, Cutter explains, “It’s called Run, Hide, and Fight.” In an active-shooter situation, it is advised that the first thing you should do is Run. If you can safely evacuate the building, do so as quickly as possible. If running is not an option, then look for a place to Hide. It’s important to lock and barricade the door of any room you’re taking cover in to impede the shooter from entering the room. In his interview with WPIX 11, Cutter notes that while taking cover under a desk may be a good place to remain unseen by the shooter, it would be difficult to fight from that position if the shooter does know that you’re there. Cutter asserted that a crucial aspect of being prepared in this situation is being prepared to Fight as a last resort. “If you can run, you run. If you can hide, you hide. If you can’t, you have to fight,” Cutter states.

It’s a grim prospect that average Americans need to be prepared in daily situations for an active shooter, but with information and safety preparedness, we have a better chance of exiting a dangerous situation like this unharmed.
