Mr. Nivakoff’s background includes over 40 years of stellar law enforcement and private investigation experience. Since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, Mr. Nivakoff has personally endeavored to initiate change in fighting terrorism by promoting preparation and preventing any actions that would threaten vulnerable persons, institutions, hospitals, schools, corporations, and small businesses. Mr. Nivakoff is an innovative leader with a reputation for transforming police departments into proactive agencies. He has sustained these improved organizations by embracing data-driven models and promoting accountability. Mr. Nivakoff has demonstrated a proven track record of safety, preparation, and calculated measures to deter and create safer environments for companies, employees, and communities.
The development of Robert Nivakoff, LLC was the natural result of many years in the forefront of law enforcement, of acting in concert with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Department of Justice, U.S. Customs, and the Homeland Security Administrations. As the Chief of Police for the Stamford Police Department, Mr. Nivakoff lead Connecticut’s largest urban police department and oversaw their $51 million budget and 440 employees. The department became the New England leader and an integral part of the Federal Task Force program in southern Connecticut. Mr. Nivakoff has also been a member of the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Task Force which seized over 200 guns in 2011 alone. Mr. Nivakoff has implemented a wide array of progressive programs including the Less Lethal Weapons Systems, Homeland Security Squad, Hazardous Material Training, Active Shooter Workplace Violence protocol, and the Crimes Against Children Unit which actively sought predators on the internet. He also actualized special teams including Stamford Police Hostage/Crisis Negotiations Team, Stamford SWAT (Special Response Team), the K-9 Squad (the largest in the area with a variety of specialties including Search/Rescue and Bomb/Ballistics detection), and expanded the Bomb Squad.
Mr. Nivakoff established an intense security evaluation for school safety and a system of collaboration for drug squads to combat gang violence which encompassed Federal, County, and Statewide units. He also acted in concert with the City of Stamford Fire and Rescue Department to familiarize police officers with nuclear, biological, and chemical operations. He initiated a revised Domestic Violence Unit, Sexual Assault Crisis Unit, and Psychological Services Unit.
Mr. Nivakoff has been frequently recognized for effecting the reduction of crime, security, and enhancing the safety of communities. He was awarded the Distinguished Police Chief State of Connecticut Award, Police Officer of the Year, Legion of Honor Award, United States Department of Justice Award, 911 COPS Rescue and Recovery Award, and 84 citations for recognition including Bravery, Commendations, and Excellent Arrest. Mr. Nivakoff received a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from John Jay College and a subsequent Masters from the University of New Haven. He has also attended the J.F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard and trained with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He has taught Criminology as an Adjunct Instructor at the State University of New York Westchester Community College and as a Lecturer at Norwalk Community College.
